high pressure sodium lamps?

I just bought a 150 Watt HPS bulb, but the directions specifically say not to use it in a standard light socket, but it doesn't say why. I ended up buying one of those ceramic lamps you put in reptile tanks, but do I need to get the ballast like the cover says even though the bulb fits perfectly?

The bulb has the same base but dont let that fool you. HPS bulbs most definetly need a ballast fixture. HPS lamps run to much wattage for standard sockets the ballasts is there to keep the bulb from getting to hot. Please do not install the HPS bulb in a standard socket or you will trip your breaker or worse cause a fire.
