Which has more horsepower, an in-line 4 cylinder, or a V-twin?

A Vtwin only has two cylinders, right? How can it compare to a 4 cylinder when it comes to power? I am getting mixed messages when I read articles online. Thanks.

Assuming both engines are the same size (total displacement) the 4 will have more top end horsepower, the V-twin will have more torque.

They are different kinds of engines for different purposes. The 4 has to be revved up to get the horsepower out of it. It will cruise at a higher RPM. The V-twin has more torque and can run slower, it has more low-range 'grunt'.

Four cylinders is not necessarily better than two. A four is smoother because there are more cylinder firings, more power pulses, per revolution. The V-twin will vibrate more, but the vibrations are lower in frequency and not as objectionable. The vibration of the four is higher frequency and can be that 'buzzing' vibration that makes your hands go numb.

A few years ago, 20 or 30 years ago, the V-twin was thought to be obsolete. V-twins go back to the 1920s (actually farther back than that, but they were in their heyday in the 20s). They were actually designed to get a bigger engine inside the frame of a bicycle. In those days there was no substitute for displacement, so the bigger the engine the better. In the 1960s they were thought to be at the end of their life, replaced by the side-by-side twin, and the the transverse four.

But v-twins are very popular just for their 'character'. People love them for how they feel under you, how they vibrate, etc. If you ask someone who has one, he'll say it's just 'more like a motorcycle'. Plus they are simpler, easier to work on, and probably longer lasting. In the 70s and 80s they began showing up on sport bikes, like the Honda Hawk and Superhawk. They are still most popular on cruisers and tourers, though.
