Ice from a tractor trailer damaged my car - can I make them pay?

I was traveling at night on the interstate when large chunks of ice flew off a tractor trailer truck and cracked my windshield and dented my hood and fender. I did not call the police or force the truck to pull over - at first I thought it was just a cracked windshield, however when I pulled over I saw the sheetmetal damage - and by then - truck was long gone. I got all the information off the truck - license number, truck number, wrote down the mile marker of the interstate and time of incident. I have called the trucking company but they keep taking a message and giving me the run around. I haven't really put on the pressure yet, but what do you think are the odds of them doing anything about this? Unfortunately they are located 8 hours from my home - so going there in person isn't really an option. I'm guessing the possible outcomes are 1. They cut me a check for the damage. 2. I sue them (probably not worth it). 3. I call my insurance company, pay the deductible.

Call the police & make a report, then the police will have to talk to them. In doing so, maybe they'll feel the "pressure" & pay up. After they talk w/ the police, fax them an estimate for the damage, & don't get too rude, or they won't communicate w/ you.
