Need a new fuel pump and sending unit?

I been having some problems with my car. Someone said that my car needs a new fuel pump and sending unit. What are the sure fire signs of needing those replaced? Whats the cost of this around?
I do mixed driving everyday; part highway, and part stop and go at lights. 1 out 5 days a week my car does something odd. I get a buck that comes every time the automatic transmission up shifts itself. If I turn off the car off and turn it back on the problem is totally gone in till the next time it decides to show back up. Which could be a few days later.

The car is a 2001 Impala LS just hit 100k miles. Ive done all the oil changes every 3k. I need to do my 100k overall still. Problems I'm aware of now is I need a new fuel filter (its old) and im sure new fuel injectors cause of their age.

simple is best, the symptoms you described is not in my opinion a bad fuel pump, it may be as simple as a bad plug or plug wire. Fuel pumps normally make starting difficult after sitting awhile as they lose prime,or run rough because the fuel pressure is too low. If the only time you feel a lurch is when shifting you may have a clogged transmission filter or torque converter.
