5. If you don't need all the intensity of an HID light, use fluorescent bulbs. They are not as bright, but are cool enough that your plant can be 1 inch away and not get burned. This close distance helps compensate for less intensity.
6. Protect hot HID bulbs from water sprays and splashes. They will crack if hit by a drop of water.
7. HID bulbs lose intensity rather fast. They are expensive and need to be replaced about once a year (depending on how many hours they are used and how often they are turned on and off.)
