Will plants die if half there root is under water?

I was just curious how hydroponics and aeroponics works if half the root is in water. I understand there is a air pump to pump the air up and create bubbles, but what if there is no air pump but the plants root is only half submerged. Also how does aeroponics and hydroponics work on plants that might not have a root to begin with? Do you mist the leaves and the root eventually grows?

Depends on the plant. I have a tropical plant at home that the roots are in the water instead of soil. Same thing with trees and plants that live in the swamp.
