Will an auto fuel pump work on a marine engine?

I have an old boat, 1973, that has a Mercruiser 4 cyl inboard. It ran fine until the fuel pump went. What, if any, auto fuel pump could I use instead of paying over $200 for a marine fuel pump?

I just replaced the fuel pump in my 76, 302 ford boat,
I was told it would be dangerous to use a car pump,
It had a special vent on top that is not found on standard fuel car pumps that connected to a sight glass so you could see if there was a leak in the diaphragm. A gas leak in a boat is very serous because the gas has nowhere to go except pool in the bottom of your sump. 1 spark and its all over, even with the blower on. I found my pump for about $125 on eBay.
