Precise Valve and Piston Timing Achieved

Saturn may be considered a young adult when it comes to the automotive industry, being only born into this world in the year 1985. But its age couldn't be taken against it as young as though it may be, it is already running beside the giants in the industry when it comes to producing quality vehicles. It comes as no surprise that it is under the substantial care of its parent company, General Motors.

One such trend that General Motor has taught Saturn is to incorporate the production of a quality Saturn Timing Chain. A timing Chain is a significant part of the car's engine as it controls the timing of the engine valves, as what its name suggests. It is also sometimes called a timing belt with internal teeth that are being used for power transmission. It is a chain driven by the crankshaft and the one that operates the camshaft. This is what makes the valves open and close with precise timing. The Saturn Timing Chain makes sure that the valve trains are kept in time with the engine pistons.

As what was said earlier, a timing chain is sometimes called a timing belt. But the terms only pertain to the difference in materials used as these two perform the same role. The Saturn Timing Chain is made up of metal or steel and the timing belt of rubber. As for where this part could be found, it is located at the front engine and is protected by a cover. This setup allows the valves to let in air and fuel into the engine. Its functioning well is important as long as it works in the right sequence, causing the driver to experience smooth and efficient driving.

In other engine designs, the Saturn Timing Chain is used in running other engine parts like the water pump and the oil pump. Because it is driven by the crankshaft and runs the camshaft, it gives more flexibility to these two parts.

These parts should then be always checked and maintained in a good condition. The engine pistons and the valve paths are dependent of the Saturn Timing Chain to keep a precise timing in movements. Failing to do so could leave the engine malfunctioning as the pistons and valves may collide with each other. Therefore, always check if the car is already having an excess in exhaust smoke, loss of power, or experiencing backfiring as these things are the symptoms of a broken Saturn Timing Chain. When this happens, replace it immediately with a new one before further damage is done.

Whats will happen to high performance piston engine aircraft when the ban on 100 LL is forced upon us? ?

Will this be the end of general aviation? If an existing certified engine is not compatible with the "new eco-friendly" fuel what then? Are we expected to re certify with a new fuel compatible engine? What about airframe system incompatibility with a proposed new fuel like vapor lock or bacteria growth? What about vintage and historical aircraft, will this park them for good? Am I the only one who thinks this sucks?

Most airplane owners and recreational pilots are indeed worried about this. However, general aviation is not a small part of the economy, so with the political clout weilded by such groups as the EAA and AOPA, a ban is not likely any time soon, and then only after a suitable substitute is found.

It's also going to take many years for all the mandatory environmental tests to be done around the nations 14,000+ public airports with paved runways, and 5,000+ heliports. I'm not going to say "don't worry", because you still need to make your voice heard in Congress (letters, emails, petetions...), but chances are very good that nothing is going to change dramatically (except the price of avgas) for 10-20 years.

The irony here is that most of the low-compression engines in older aircraft that were designed to burn 80 octane LEADED fuel actually have lower lead emissions than those that must burn 100LL, which has a higher lead content (to boost octane) than the 80 octane stuff.

Many 1940's and earlier vintage engines can run on as little 73 octane, which is the maximum octane attainable by a manufacturer without adding lead. Such engines are very low compression, and therefore less powerful than high-compression engines of the same displacement, but it is one viable alternative, at least for smaller aircraft such as those in the light sport category.
