1980's era 316 John Deere tractor - not charging?
Hello and thanks for the help up front. I have a 1980's era 316 era John Deere lawn tractor with an Onan 2 cyl engine. It is not charging. The bat light is on and I have to charge w/ battery charger ~ every other mowing. What is typically the problem? Is the charging (alternator) also the same as the starter assembly? I have heard that is the case. Any help is appreciated. Thx.
It sounds like you have an arrangement similar to that found on the old Wheel Horse with the Kholer engine. The dynamo is belt linked to the engine pulley and is run as a motor during start up. I would check the brushes in the dynamo, if it is a dynamo. If it's a flywheel alternator, check the diodes.
