When driving a manual transmission and hit the brakes is it necessary that we also press the clutch ?

I have seen drivers who drive manual hit the clutch while other don't so I got confused as to if we have to or not.

Not necessarily, but if you slow down too muich for the gear you are in without pressing the clutch, you can stall.

If you're going to be coming to a full stop, you should press the clutch and put it in neutral while you are braking, then release the clutch. That way, you don't have to ride the clutch the whole time you are braking, and are already in neutral once you stop, so you don't have to do anything else.

For more advanced driving, it's also possible to downshift while breaking, or even instead of braking, and slow down using the transmission. However, this wears out the transmission and clutch faster, both of which are far more expensive than brakes. I'd generally agree with the proposition that it makes more sense to slow down with the brakes than with the gearbox, since that is what they are designed to do.

If not coming to a complete stop, but still slowing down substantially(i.e. for making a turn), you will have to downshift anyways, just do so while using the brakes.
